The History of Improv Utopia
Improv Utopia began as an idea around 2006, when Nick Armstrong, John Abbott, and Jessica Young were performing together on NiteTerrors, a JTS Brown team coached by Craig Cackowski. In 2011, that idea became real. Nick approached John, Jessica, Brian James O’Connell, and Patricia Forman with a plan to create a Scout-like experience that combined summer camp with improv.
That same year, Camp Improv Utopia launched at Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria, California. The inaugural camp sold out and brought together improvisers from theaters across the country. Camp Ocean Pines is still the home of the West Camp today.
In 2014, Improv Utopia expanded across the country with the launch of Camp East, and in 2015 the original Cambria camp officially became Camp Improv Utopia West. Camp East sold out its first year and welcomed campers from around the world. It was held at Camp Netimus in Milford, Pennsylvania, in 2014 and 2015, then at Trout Lake in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, from 2016 through 2024. In 2026, Camp East found a new home at Camp Pontiac in Copake, New York.
In 2016, Camp Improv Utopia Yosemite launched and, like East and West, sold out its first year. Yosemite brought a new kind of curriculum to Improv Utopia: campers spend the whole weekend with one instructor, going deep on a longform format that instructor has mastered. Camp Yosemite is held at Calvin Crest in Oakhurst, California.
In 2018, Improv Utopia went international. Its first retreat outside the United States, IU Ireland, sold out in 2018 and 2019 and brought improvisers together in Newgrange, County Meath. The international series continued in 2023 and 2024 in La Zenia, Spain. Set in a more urban location near the Mediterranean Sea, IU Spain offered a smaller, more intimate experience than the traditional U.S. camps.
In 2025, Improv Utopia launched Evolve, a leadership, advanced improv and community-building weekend for improv theater seasoned improvisers, owners, artistic directors, teachers, and ensemble leaders. The first Evolve took place in Jamestown, Colorado. Where the other camps focus on the craft of improv, Evolve focuses on the people who build and run improv communities and more advanced improvisers. Evolve’s next edition takes place May 7–9, 2027, at Bradford Woods in Martinsville, Indiana.
Today, Improv Utopia is a worldwide community of improvisers and a nonprofit that gives back to arts organizations and communities.

As a non-profit entity, Improv Utopia provides a variety of immersive experiences, including improv camps, virtual workshops, and retreats designed to cater to improvisers and theater administrators of all skill levels. Our programs are crafted to promote collaboration, spontaneity, and emotional intelligence, creating a supportive environment where participants can explore their creativity and develop their improvisational or theater business skills.
