Our Organization
The History of Improv Utopia
Improv Utopia began as an idea around 2006, when Nick Armstrong, John Abbott, and Jessica Young were performing together on a JTS Brown team called NiteTerrors, coached by Craig Cackowski. The idea came to fruition in 2011, when Nick approached John, Jessica, Brian James O'Connell, and Patricia Forman about creating a Scout-like experience that combined summer camp with improv.
In 2011, Camp Improv Utopia launched at Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria, California, with a sold-out inaugural camp that brought together improvisers from theaters across the country. The West Camp continues to call Camp Ocean Pines home today.
In 2014, Improv Utopia expanded with the launch of Camp East, prompting the original Cambria camp to officially become Camp Improv Utopia West in 2015. Camp East was held at Camp Netimus in Milford, Pennsylvania, in 2014 and 2015. Its first year also sold out, welcoming campers from around the world.
From 2016 through 2024, Camp East was held at Trout Lake in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. In 2026, Camp East found a new home at Camp Pontiac in Copake, New York.
In 2016, Camp Improv Utopia Yosemite launched and, like East and West before it, sold out its inaugural year. Yosemite introduced a new curriculum to the Improv Utopia experience: campers spend the entire weekend with one instructor, diving deep into a longform format the instructor has mastered. Camp Yosemite is held at Calvin Crest in Oakhurst, California.
In 2018, Improv Utopia went international with its first retreat in Ireland, which also sold out. IU Ireland brought improvisers together in Newgrange, County Meath, for Improv Utopia’s first camp experience outside the United States.
In 2023 and 2024, Improv Utopia continued its international retreat series in La Zenia, Spain. Unlike the traditional U.S. camp experience, IU Spain took place in a more urban setting near the Mediterranean Sea and offered a more intimate experience with a smaller group of improvisers.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
Improv Utopia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing improvisers together for exceptional training, meaningful connection, and a one-of-a-kind camp experience. We combine improv, community, camaraderie, and nature in a welcoming, relaxed environment where people can learn, play, and connect.
Our camps bring together improvisers from around the world to learn from top instructors, build community, and spend a weekend immersed in improv. Whether you're newer to improv or have years of experience, there’s a place for you at Improv Utopia.
As a nonprofit, our impact extends beyond camp. Proceeds from our programs are reinvested into the broader improv community through scholarships, festival subsidies, theater support, and other improv-related initiatives around the world.
Since our first camp in 2011, Improv Utopia has grown into a community that reaches far beyond a single weekend. Come for the improv, the people, and the experience and leave with connections that last long after camp ends.
