Improv Utopia Evolve: Nick Armstrong on His Vision for the Future of Improv

Improv has always been about connection, creativity, and transformation, and few people understand that better than Nick Armstrong, founder of Improv Utopia. Over the years, Nick has worked tirelessly to create spaces where improvisers can thrive—not just on stage, but in building inclusive, professional communities. Now, with the launch of Improv Utopia Evolve, Nick is taking things to the next level.

What inspired you to create IU Evolve?

Improv Utopia has always been about helping improv evolve—making it more professional, more inclusive, and above all, safer. Lately, I’ve been getting bombarded with questions on how to run a business, how to start one, sustain one, what’s next in my improv training and career, how to structure festivals, how to teach classes, and so much more. So, I started thinking—there’s a real need here. Maybe it’s time we start training improvisers not just in scene work, but in the essential skills that make a thriving, professional improv community: best practices, HR training, inclusivity training, and all that important stuff that gets overlooked or just isn’t available.

And, as our other camps focus on beginners and intermediate-level improvisers, I realized we’ve got a gap. There’s a need for a more advanced track—something for the folks who’ve been doing this for 5+ years, who are ready to dive deeper, refine their craft, and take their improv to the next level.

We’re evolving, and it’s time for our industry to evolve with us.

What can participants expect from the business-focused track?

At Improv Utopia Evolve, the Business Track isn’t just about spreadsheets and marketing strategies. It’s about helping improvisers, teachers, and performers turn their passion into sustainable, professional endeavors. Whether you're running your own improv theater, organizing a festival, or just trying to figure out how to make a living off your craft.

Can you tell us about the curriculum for the advanced improv track?

I will be handpicking top-tier improv instructors who are seasoned professionals with years of experience both on stage and in the classroom. You’ll dive deep into skill-based intensives, with each instructor leading you through focused, transformative sessions. Whether it’s advanced character work, heightened listening, nuanced scene work, or emotional range, these intensives are designed to refine your core abilities.

Instead of just one perspective, you’ll get two. You’ll have the opportunity to work with two different instructors, each offering their unique approach to improv. With around 6 hours per instructor, you’ll get a chance to immerse yourself in different teaching styles and methods, giving you a richer, more diverse understanding of advanced improv techniques.

How has your own journey in improv influenced the design and focus of this camp.

I’ve learned a ton over the years from owning multiple improv and comedy businesses, running festivals, organizing events, and navigating the ups and downs that come with it all. The challenges are real—there’s burnout, constant hustle, and the overwhelming struggle to stay afloat. But through it all, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge about what works and what doesn’t.

I want to pass that knowledge on to the next generation of improv entrepreneurs and performers. My goal is simple: to teach you how to avoid the mistakes I made early on, and help you get farther ahead, faster than I ever was when I started. I've always believed that a high tide raises all ships, and this is my way of giving back—by sharing what I’ve learned.

This isn’t just about avoiding pitfalls; it’s about empowering you to build something sustainable, meaningful, and successful. Whether you’re running your own theater, producing a festival, or just trying to make a living from improv, I want to set you up with the tools and insights that will take you further than you ever imagined.

Will Advanced Improv attendees get to do any Business Track and vice versa?

At Improv Utopia Evolve, the Improv and Business tracks will be separate, but we’ve built plenty of opportunities for both groups to connect and benefit from each other.

Here’s how:

1.     Performance Opportunities for Business Track Improvisers:
Business track attendees will still have the chance to perform in jams, shows, and performance keeping their improv skills sharp while learning the business side of things.

2.     Business Roundtables Open to All:
Both tracks will have access to Business Roundtables, where improvisers and business-focused attendees can share ideas, ask questions, and learn from each other’s experiences.

3.     Inclusivity & HR Training for Everyone:
Inclusivity and HR Training sessions will be available to all participants, providing essential tools for building safe, supportive environments in both improv and business settings.

As Nick shared, improv is evolving, and it’s time for the community to evolve with it. Improv Utopia Evolve is your opportunity to be part of that evolution—expanding your artistry, building stronger communities, and shaping the future of this incredible art form.

The inaugural Camp Evolve will take place from July 3d - July 6th, 2025 in Jamestown, CO. Registration will be opening soon, so stay tuned for updates and announcements. In the meantime, you can learn more about Camp Evolve here.
